Everything You Need to Know About Canine Influenza Virus

Want information about Canine Influenza? Well here at Colonial, we have answers for you!

There are 2 strains of canine influenza in New York State.  At this point in time we recommend the influenza vaccine for dogs with high risk of exposure:  show dogs, boarding, dog parks, doggie day care or if they will have exposure to other dogs.  We do stock the vaccine and recommend protection against both virus strains.

How does it work?

There are two virus strains, H3N8 and H3N2. Each virus strain has its own vaccine. Both vaccines for each virus strain require a first dose as well as a follow-up dose 3 weeks later. However, protection is not activated until 2 weeks after the second injection.  (Then there will be a follow up with annual boosters in a year.)
